Hot electric hatchback promises a 310-mile range
Cupra have revealed their next production vehicle in the form of an all-electric hot hatch named, El-Born, unveiled today ahead of a 2021 launch, the El-Born is said to bring “sustainable mobility with a unique character and dynamism”, Seat’s separate performance brand will use the same MEB electric platform for the new model as Volkswagen used for the ID 3.
Only a small amount of technical details were revealed for the Cupra El-Born. The EV hatch will be powered by a 77kWh battery pack that sends power through a rear-mounted electric motor of unidentified output. Cupra claims a range of up to 310 miles on a single charge, with rapid charging making it capable of 161 miles of charge in 30 minutes. The Seat concept version of the El-Born features a 62kWh battery for a range of 261 miles.
While no 0-62mph sprint has been announced, Cupra quotes a 0-31mph time of 2.9sec, the Seat concept promised a 0-62mph time of 7.5sec from a 201bhp electric motor for an example. The El-Born brings characters like that of VW’s ID 3, including an enhanced head-up display. Cupra-specific detailing includes sports bucket seats and a racier steering wheel design with driving mode buttons.
The El-Born will be built in Zwickau, Germany. Along with the ID 3 at the Volkswagen Group’s plant. It will join the Leon, Ateca and upcoming Formentor in the Cupra line-up for 2021.
