Bespoke Porsche Cayenne rival is 740bhp hybrid super-SUV
The new BMW XM takes the M division into bold new electrified performance era, the XM is the first electrified car from BMW’s performance division and only its second completely bespoke car since the M1 supercar of 1978.
It is also the most powerful and expensive car yet, with a range-topping ‘Red Label’ variant in 2023 set to produce 738bhp, and a price tag of £144,980. Available to order now.
The standard XM seen here, packs a combined 644bhp and 590lb ft from a newly developed PHEV system. This couples the M divisions 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 with a new 194bhp electric motor, integrated into the eight-speed automatic gearbox. These two powertrains send power to both axles to help propel the 2,710kg XM from 0-62mph in just 4.3sec and on to an optionally derestricted 168mph top speed.
BMW claims an EV-only working range of between 51 and 55 miles, courtesy of a 25.7kWh battery mounted under the floor.
The Red Label variant will boost total outputs to 738bhp and 738lb ft, making it the most powerful non-electric SUV on the market.
The exterior of the XM is striking to say the least, as BMW promised the radical XM concept showed the previous year was “more than 90%” ready for production and with minimal design changes would be the final car you would see in dealerships. Illuminated kidney grille surrounds feature and a ludicrously aggressive profile that suggests this isn’t your ordinary ‘M’.
On the inside there are M-specific display modes displayed on the wrap-around infotainment screen, M buttons on the steering wheel, carbon shift paddles, M-specific pedals and various sports-themed finishes and trim elements throughout to mark this out obviously from a standard BMW SUV.
